The SEO Problem That Costs You Silently

The page that looked fine and wasn't

An editorial illustration of a broken link in an otherwise unbroken chain, value fading downward

Here's a failure mode that should scare any business owner more than it does: a page can be indexed, ranking, and bringing in traffic for years -- while one broken link on it quietly bleeds away search value every single day. Nothing in the code looks wrong. Nothing crashes. The page just slowly gets worse at its job, and almost nobody notices until the traffic numbers are noticeably down.

I caught exactly this on one of my own sites. The fix itself wasn't the interesting part -- the interesting part was the rule I set for myself once I found it: live URL integrity issues jump the queue over everything else. Not "we'll get to it next sprint." Fixed all the way to production, the same day, with a check added so it can't quietly happen again.

Why "later" will cost you

A broken internal link does three things at once, and none of them show up in a quick glance at the page: it raises your bounce rate, it wastes the search engine's limited attention on your site (its "crawl budget"), and it signals -- subtly, but really -- that your site isn't well maintained. None of that fixes itself. It compounds, quietly, for as long as nobody looks.

The businesses that get hurt worst by this aren't the ones with no website. They're the ones with a good website that nobody's been auditing, because it "already works." Working and well-maintained are not the same claim.

What I actually do about it now

I don't rely on remembering to check. I built automated integrity checks into my own publishing pipeline, so a broken link gets caught and reported the moment it happens, not the moment someone stumbles across it eighteen months later. That's the kind of thing AI-assisted tooling is genuinely good at -- not writing your copy for you, but standing watch on the boring, expensive stuff a busy owner will never have time to check by hand.
